Very scenic course. Following an out-and-back first two miles on gently rolling Watauga Road, the rest of the race is run on the Virginia Creeper Trail, a former railroad bed. One of the two out-and-back segments on the Trail is repeated, as is a short portion of the other segment. Runners pass the start/finish area at 2, 9, 18 and 25 miles. The Trail is flat to gentle grade, with (except for the occasional wooden trestle) a soft running surface. Aid stations (water/sports drink) every 2 - 2 1/2 miles, with refreshments and homemade goodies at the finish.

Few amenities. Race memento (paperweight with race logo) to participants. Awards presented to the overall male and female winners. Trophies will be awarded to the top (1) finisher in the following age groups, male and female: 29-under, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+. A finish certificate will be mailed to first-time marathoners. Post card results will be mailed to all finishers.

I-81 to exit 19. East on U.S. 58 approximately 1.5 miles. Turn right on Watauga Road. 3.25 miles to Watauga Elementary School. Park and ride shuttle back to start/finish area.
